Over the river and through the woods!

Ok, more like "through the lock and under the bridges" but it doesn't have the same ring to it. We left Norfolk "late" today, after rewarding ourselves with a full night of sleep. We got stuck waiting for bridges and only covered 58 miles when we were hoping for 100. We still found a beautiful anchorage for the night, just north of the Albemarle.

A little sleep deprived, we both thought this was comical. "You too could own a push-boat! Just cut some windows in a porta potty and put it on a water bed!"


Finally, officially, on the ICW. 

In the lock at Great Bridge, VA. We added our sticker to the collection. 


Down the "ditch". And under another bridge. 


Maizey is so tired after yesterday, she'll sleep... With her face in the non-skid.




Here's a really scenic length of the ditch. Sometimes, it's literally a cut through the swamp/forest/whatever.

Also, "Coinjock"!?!? Where did that name come from?

We brought a little Rhode island class with us. Saugy hot dogs. They were supposed to go to Long island, but we forgot to hand them off. (Sorry Sarah!!)


This evening I went "Full Rhode island". A Saugy dog with mustard, wrapped in a tortilla. Artfully paired with Whalers Rise. Served in flannel. 

It's so quiet and still, it almost makes your ears ring. Maizey is on high alert.

Farewell NY!

Getting out the gate this morning at 05:51, we let the port Jeff-Bridgeport ferry go first.  Long island sound put on a show! We had some great weather down the rest of the sound.  A lighthouse, just because. And a contrast: New York City by water. A wild ride, lots of wakes, but hell gate was timed well. And nothing as exciting as the last time we tried to go through the city by booat...  I want you all to know: our dog is spoiled rotten. That is all. Sandy hook is a beautiful contrast to the city. This is the first stop that we haven't visited before. Now it's starting to feel like an adventure! We'll be here tonight before another early morning as we try to get to Cape May tomorrow. A 130+ mile run. Of successful, it will be our longest yet, and potentially of the whole trip... Tune in tomorrow!! Trip odometer: 181 nm.  Today: 67 nm.

The dirty deets

 Sorry, but we were exhausted and all out of sorts yesterday. The full October 31st doesn't have too much to tell. We woke up, and made moves for the dock.  Our last sunrise on the move (for a while?).  Weaving through the keys and the mangrove cuts on our way to the dock.  Tied up in the new digs. It feels like "the ragged edge". Both good and bad. We'll give it a minute while we settle in before we pass judgement.  OK! TRIP TOTALS! The part you were really looking forward to!  21 days, plus 3 waiting for the blow to pass in Rhode island.  Engine hours: 182.3(+/- 0.1) 1.3 tubes of sunscreen.  16 qts of oil (2 oil change and a slight leak on the port side) 6 fuel filters.  5 lbs of cheese. Mostly cheddar. 44 tortillas. 49 kts, Max wind gust. (Probably motoring into it at 10 kts). Still unpleasant. 610 gallons of diesel. 1 apple pie.  10 states. 1 bottle of ketchup.  1,635 nautical miles. "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half s

 10/23/21 We really made it to the low country today! After a beautiful night in the Cyprus swamp that is northern South Carolina, we broke through to big tides, oysters, and mud flats. We were noticing a strange vibration in the post engine at certain rpms. I finally got in to check for anything in the prop. See the photos below to see what I found...Here's some photos to catch you up from the last three days! Shrimp boats.  This is it. The finest cuisine in the world.  We make a grocery store run in Carolina beach. We had to carry everything almost a mile, back to the dinghy. We brought every ounce of this stuff we could carry.  Highlights from the last couple days:  "Old Smokie". Probably has a brand new, tier IV emissions common rail biodiesel Scania in there.  Motorized tiki hut. "But officer, my only option was to drink and drive!"  Sarah's house. Yeah that's a life size mermaid sculpture. Lighthouse for the calendar. Lighthouse keepers marina, SC.
