Florida in sight!

 10/25/21

We're about 5 miles from the border, anchored in a little creek just south of Jekyll island. We covered a meandering 95 miles today, leaving Coffee Bluff around 930 this morning and dropping the hook at 7 pm. 


We tried to make a run outside, in the ocean, but it was a little lumpy so ran back into the next sound south, St Catherine's and continued down the ICW.


This was actually one of the first days we ran from inside for any length of time. It was raining. Nice to get a freshwater rinse.

Em drove for most of the day. I caught her looking like Steve zissou at one point. 



Lots of dolphins today. Here's Maizey on patrol in her bulletproof uniform, I mean flowery life jacket. 


She looks like Dwayne Johnson, ready to rumble, with her muscles bulging out of a Hawaiian shirt.


Donkeys! A new critter to add to the list. On one of the little islands in the low country. 

There's a little shack in that hummock. I can't imagine spending any appreciable time there. The bugs probably carried the previous inhabitant off...

Another "cute" tug. We heard this guy on the radio, it was like watching swamp loggers, where you need the sub titles, even though you're pretty sure it's English.



More pleasing combinations of colors and patterns resembling sunset.

Farewell NY!

Getting out the gate this morning at 05:51, we let the port Jeff-Bridgeport ferry go first.  Long island sound put on a show! We had some great weather down the rest of the sound.  A lighthouse, just because. And a contrast: New York City by water. A wild ride, lots of wakes, but hell gate was timed well. And nothing as exciting as the last time we tried to go through the city by booat...  I want you all to know: our dog is spoiled rotten. That is all. Sandy hook is a beautiful contrast to the city. This is the first stop that we haven't visited before. Now it's starting to feel like an adventure! We'll be here tonight before another early morning as we try to get to Cape May tomorrow. A 130+ mile run. Of successful, it will be our longest yet, and potentially of the whole trip... Tune in tomorrow!! Trip odometer: 181 nm.  Today: 67 nm.

The dirty deets

 Sorry, but we were exhausted and all out of sorts yesterday. The full October 31st doesn't have too much to tell. We woke up, and made moves for the dock.  Our last sunrise on the move (for a while?).  Weaving through the keys and the mangrove cuts on our way to the dock.  Tied up in the new digs. It feels like "the ragged edge". Both good and bad. We'll give it a minute while we settle in before we pass judgement.  OK! TRIP TOTALS! The part you were really looking forward to!  21 days, plus 3 waiting for the blow to pass in Rhode island.  Engine hours: 182.3(+/- 0.1) 1.3 tubes of sunscreen.  16 qts of oil (2 oil change and a slight leak on the port side) 6 fuel filters.  5 lbs of cheese. Mostly cheddar. 44 tortillas. 49 kts, Max wind gust. (Probably motoring into it at 10 kts).  10/23/21 We really made it to the low country today! After a beautiful night in the Cyprus swamp that is northern South Carolina, we broke through to big tides, oysters, and mud flats. We were noticing a strange vibration in the post engine at certain rpms. I finally got in to check for anything in the prop. See the photos below to see what I found...Here's some photos to catch you up from the last three days! Shrimp boats.  This is it. The finest cuisine in the world.  We make a grocery store run in Carolina beach. We had to carry everything almost a mile, back to the dinghy. We brought every ounce of this stuff we could carry.  Highlights from the last couple days:  "Old Smokie". Probably has a brand new, tier IV emissions common rail biodiesel Scania in there.  Motorized tiki hut. "But officer, my only option was to drink and drive!"  Sarah's house.
